Songs of Greatness Kept in the Dark

Radio seems to stick with that preselected list of songs, bands, albums to play for us listeners. They play tons of great songs, but most of those songs I personally care not to hear over and over when there's a wide array of songs that are pretty amazing and could use some attention. Songs that you've never even heard of; that are from an artist or band you most likely know and love. Bands like Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and the Who; whom seem to have the same 6 or 7 songs played on the radio. There are tons more awesome songs from these artists that the radio "epically fails" to play. Here are some songs (in no particular order) that have been left behind and need to be heard. I hope you enjoy.

Top 25

1. Led Zeppelin - "The Rover" is a classic song from the fantastic album Physical Graffiti. Known by those who like to "get the lead out", this rocking & grooving number is a great jam to dance to, or just sit back & enjoy with awe inspiring intrigue. There is a certain rawness to this song that makes it both electrifying and exciting.

2. The Yardbirds - "I'm Not Talking" is originally a Mose Allison song, the Yardbirds do a great job on this energetic number by playing a little faster and more heavy. This song will make you want to shake, rattle, and roll.

3. Pink Floyd - "Childhood's End" is a song that makes me feel like I'm driving a jeep through the jungle, maybe because this song comes from the under-appreciated (even by Pink Floyd) soundtrack album Obscured by Clouds, which is about a group of people who stay with the natives of Papua New Guinea. It has a pre-Darkside of the Moon sound that reminisce the genius of Pink Floyd.

4. David Bowie - "The Width of a Circle" is rockin tune that comes from Dave's second album The Man Who Sold The World. It has a rich song structure that starts a little spacey but has a quick lick into a surprisingly crazy high-energy rock-n-roll that morphs into a catchy beat and riffs that make you want to bob your head and hop.

5. Electric Light Orchestra - "Night in the City" is from the album Out of the Blue and actually makes you feel as if you were walking through a futuristic city at night. This upbeat song has a lot going on in all aspects including vocals, instruments, and sound effects; that which defines E.L.O.

6. The Moody Blues - "Legend of a Mind" might be one of the trippyest songs out there. The song is about Mr. Timothy Leary and comes from the psychedelic album In Search of the Lost Chord. Some might say this song takes you places and rocks an awesome flute solo which anyone could appreciate.

7. Yes - "Heart of the Sunrise": Definitely one of my favorite bands who has many neglected songs so it was a tough choice but I went with this masterpiece from the fantastic album Fragile. Psychotic guitar riffs and bass lines with attacking drums are thrown at you like a electric hurricane, but then calms down with a gentle and soothing keyboards. The bridge has a great guitar and keyboard duel/trade off as well.

8. Elvis Presley - "Trying to Get to You":This gritty blues song is simple but still rocking. Accompanying Elvis' s god like voice is the electric guitar and just a bass drum that delivers a wonderful song.

9. T-REX - "Sunken Rags": A quick catchy number that provides killer breaks, electric vocals, a sonic instrumentals that makes ya boogie. This song is not one to pass up.

10. Elton John - "Dirty Little Girl": Great song from the acclaimed Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album. Elton uses a cowboy saloon sound for the piano and later in the song a magical mellotron to give it more flavor.

11. the Rolling Stones - "2000 Man": From Their Satanic Majesties Request this song leads well with its intro with a galloping drum beat, kicks it with a more upbeat tone along with joyful backing vocals.

12. Deep Purple - "Child in Time": Starts off slow then gradually builds up more energy which carries into a classic march beat then rocking out with a amazing guitar solo as it settles back into where it started. Deep Purple gets it done with this power anthem.

13. Black Sabbath - "Hand of Doom": Here is a song which comes from the classic album Paranoid, which has tons of hit songs where it was overlooked. A dark but chill verse that explodes into the thrashing chorus, the bridge is a blizzard of gloomy chaotic rock that throws you back into the verse and chorus.

14. Frank Zappa - "Directly from My Heart to You": A classic blues number that uses the violin has the lead, which blends in nicely, instead of a guitar and it really makes the song stand out from other blues songs.

15. the Zombies - "If It Don't Work Out": The backing vocals and piano melody what carries this exciting number the most. A British band from the British Invasion that rarely gets any love, this is one of their songs that shows the greatness which was overshadowed by the like of the beatles, kinks, and stones.

16. Wishbone Ash - "Living Proof": I love how this opens up with a guitar riff that pumps you up for whats to come in the song. The two guitar players are almost dueling one another but yet are still playing together as one to deliver this rocker.

17. Grand Funk Railroad/ the Animals - "Inside, Looking Out": Going to kill two birds with one stone with this great song. Originally the done by the Animals then given second life and extended by GFR. Grand Funk makes it more of a funky jam session, where as the Animals version is more bluesy.

18. the Beatles - "Happiness Is A Warm Gun": Gotta have a Beatles song in a rock Top 25, why not from their classic self titled album a.k.a. The White Album. This masterpiece has four catchy parts each with different time signatures that are incredible.

19. Queen - "Liar": Comes from Queen's first album which is self titled. This is pure rock-n-roll right here with sonic thunder instrumentals and Freddie Mercury's astonishing vocal range sends you racing like a tornado through a trailer park.

20. the Who - "Doctor Jimmy": The Who has many great albums one of them is Quadrophenia maybe their best work and "Doctor Jimmy" is one of their best song. The arrangements and breaks in this song are mind blowing and amazing.

21. Jimi Hendrix - "Hey Baby(New Rising Sun)": The Intro launches you into the sky with it's jolting and gritty notes then sets you down softly in it's soulful chill verse. This jam is relaxing but still edgy with an always hypnotizing guitar solo from Hendrix that floats you calmly downstream with ease.

22. the Cars - "Candy-O": Their second albums titled track, Candy-O is quick fun tune to play over and over again. I am very surprise this song wasn't that mainstream because it is very catchy and has smooth groove but yet its still has raw power.

23. Alice Cooper - "Hello Hooray": Opening track for the great Billion Dollar Babies, that starts off the album quite nicely. A more classy number from Cooper that is both relaxing and riveting. My favorite part is the outro which fades out into the clam of silence.

24. King Crimson - "Epitaph including March For No Reason and Tomorrow And Tomorrow": A beautiful song that comes from the magnificent album In the Court of the of the Crimson King. The bass and drums sets the chill mood and the dream like mellotron has never sounded better.

25. Genesis - "The Return of the Giant of Hogweed": Early Genesis usually goes by unnoticed, like this classic which comes from Nursery Cryme their 2nd album. One of their heavier songs that opens up with a heavy metal like guitar rift and some usage of the drum machine when it was just a baby.

Dust in the Wind

Hope you will check out these fantastic songs and as well as enjoy them too. Here is some other note able mentions that barely missed the list: The Kinks- "Till the End of the Day", Tommy James and the Shondells- "Loved One", Klaatu- "Sub-Rosa Subway", Jethro Tull- "A Song for Jeffrey", Emerson, Lake & Palmer- "Karn Evil 9: 1st Impression, Part 1", and Todd Rundgren- "Couldn't I Just Tell You the Way I Feel". Jimi Hendrix-May This Be Love (The Radio Plays a good chunk of Hendrix around here (i.e. Wind Cries Mary, Purple haze, Foxey Lady, Hey Joe, Voodoo Chile, Fire and of course All Along the Watchtower), I just think this is a missed gem.

The Beatles-Dear Prudence (Gorgeous Guitar, Don't hear it anywhere)

AC/DC-Sin City (The Rock Station around here used to play it, but they haven't in nearly a year now; one of AC/DC's Best).

Bob Dylan- Idiot Wind (One of his best, yet always gets shadowed by the equally great "Like A Rolling Stone") Also "Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts; awesome ballad, and Tombstone Blues.
